Superfund Quilts

A material exploration of Superfund sites in the Salt Lake Valley, this series merges craft traditions with urban ecology. Through site visits, the artist identifies materials to incorporate into handmade papers. By displaying the material history of the region, this work examines the boundaries and permeability between landscapes deemed hazardous, those granted scenic value, and those considered safe for human communities. Through an ecofeminist lens, the work also examines the forces of petro-masculinity that continue to mark many of these landscapes and seeks to offer alternatives through the historically feminine labor of quilting.
